Deciding to look for psychiatric support is not a small thing. And once you have made that decision, the next part -- actually finding someone, figuring out what they offer, knowing what to expect -- can feel like a lot.

If you are searching for psychiatric care in the Jacksonville area, here is a simple guide to getting started.

Step 1: Know What Kind of Provider You Are Looking For

Not all mental health providers do the same thing, and it helps to know the difference before you start searching.

  • Psychiatrists and PMHNPs are medical providers who specialize in mental health. They can evaluate, diagnose, and prescribe medication. In Florida, Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners like Erica Schulte at Tide Health provide this same scope of care.

  • Therapists and counselors offer talk therapy. They do not prescribe medication.

  • Psychologists focus on assessment and therapy, not medication management.

If you are looking for medication evaluation or management for anxiety, depression, ADHD, or something similar, a psychiatrist or PMHNP is the right starting point.

Step 2: Think About What Matters to You in a Provider

The relationship with your provider matters more than most people realize. A few things worth thinking about:

  • Does the appointment feel rushed, or is there actually time to talk?

  • Is the environment welcoming and easy to be in?

  • Is the communication clear -- do you leave understanding what is happening and why?

  • Does this person have experience with what you are dealing with?

At Tide Health, the first appointment is 90 minutes because understanding someone's history and goals properly takes more than a few minutes. Appointments are paced and designed to feel calm and thorough.

Step 3: Understand Pricing and Insurance

Tide Health currently accepts Aetna and Cigna. If you use a different plan, self-pay is available. A superbill can be provided on request so you can submit to your insurance company for possible out-of-network reimbursement.

Pricing is straightforward:

  • Initial Psychiatric Evaluation (90 min): $230

  • Follow-Up Visit (20 min): $95

  • Medication Refill Visit (15 min): $85

Step 4: Know What to Expect

Your First Appointment

The initial evaluation is 90 minutes and takes place in person at the Saint Johns office (139 Roberts Village Ct., Suite 1602). It is a conversation, not an interview. You will have room to talk through your history, what has been going on, and what you are hoping for. Nothing needs to be figured out before you arrive.

Follow-Up Visits

These are 20-minute appointments focused on how things are going and whether any adjustments make sense. Many can be completed virtually after your first in-person visit, which makes it much easier to stay consistent.

Medication Refill Visits

For established patients who are doing well, 15-minute check-ins are available for quick reviews and prescription refills.

The goal of every appointment at Tide Health is simple: make sure you feel heard, informed, and supported. Not just seen and sent on your way.

You Do Not Have to Be in Crisis to Come In

Psychiatric care is not reserved for emergencies. It is for anyone whose mental health is getting in the way of the life they want to be living. Whether that looks like persistent low mood, trouble focusing, anxiety that will not settle, or just not feeling like yourself, that is enough of a reason to reach out.

Tide Health is located in Saint Johns and is easy to get to from across greater Jacksonville -- including Mandarin, Ponte Vedra, Fleming Island, and nearby communities. Virtual follow-up options make ongoing care accessible even further out.
